Carin Norberg: The Nordic Africa Institute’s new director
20 January 2006: The Nordic Africa Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Carin Norberg as its Director effective January 1, 2006.
Carin Norberg has worked with and in Africa most of her working life.
Her most recent positions (2002–2005) have been with Transparency
International in Berlin, Germany, first as Executive Director and later
as Programme Manager at the Global Programmes Department. She has spent
most of her working life (1970–2002) with the Swedish International
Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). During 12 years (1990–2002) she
held a position as Assistant Director General with responsibility for
three different major areas and departments: Department for East and
West Africa (1990–95); Humanitarian Assistance and Co-operation with
NGOs (1995–99); and, Department for Democracy and Social Development
(1999–2002). Between 1984–87 she worked as manpower advisor to the UN
Commissioner for Namibia in New York. She has spent many years in
Southern Africa during the Swedish involvement in the struggle for
liberation in the region and against apartheid in South Africa. Carin
Norberg holds a MA in political science and economics from Uppsala
University.
Carin Norberg has served as a member of various Boards; i.a. the Board of the Nordic Africa Institute 1991–1999; the Board of the Swedish Institute of Alexandria 2000–2003; and the Advisory Board of Council on Peace and Security (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) 1996–99. Since 2003 she is member of the Advisory Board of the World Governance Assessment Project.
The Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala serves as a research, documentation and information centre on modern Africa for the Nordic countries. It promotes research and studies on Africa in the Nordic countries and co-operation between African and Nordic researchers as well as disseminates information about current African issues. It is financed jointly by the Nordic countries and governed by a Programme and Research Council.
