Trade liberalisation and openness have been flagships of conventional economic policy advice to most African countries over the last decades. The focus however has been on the impact of international trade on development rather than the requirements that development should shape of the international trading system.

Dr. Yenkong Ngangjoh Hodu is a lecturer at Manchester University, School of Law and a former researcher with the Nordic Africa Institute. He is an expert on international trade with a focus on Africa and is the editor of a new book on the EU and the EPAs: “Trade Relations Between the EU and Africa – Development, challenges and options beyond the Cotonou Agreement” (Routledge 2009).
